Historic Sotterley is proud to host the third event in its 2020 Sotterley Speaker Series on Wednesday, July 22nd.Dr. Richard Bell, Author and Professor ofHistory, will presentHamilton: How the Musical Remixes American History.This is a free virtual event.
Everyone knows Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning musical, “Hamilton,” is surely among the most popular works to hit Broadway in recent memory, but how historically accurate is it? What does this landmark musical get right—and get wrong—about Alexander Hamilton, the American Revolution, the birth of the United States, and about history as we know it?
Dr. Richard Bell is Associate Professor of History at the University of Maryland. He holds a BA from the University of Cambridge and a Ph.D. from HarvardUniversity. Dr. Bell has won more than a dozen teaching awards, including the 2017 University System of Maryland Board of Regents Faculty Award forExcellence in Teaching, the highest honor for teaching faculty in the Maryland state system. He has held major research fellowships at Yale, Cambridge, and theLibrary of Congress and is the recipient of the National Endowment of theHumanities Public Scholar award.He serves as a Trustee of the MarylandHistorical Society, as an elected member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, and as a fellow of the Royal Historical Society.He is the author of two books. One is about the history of suicide in early America. The other,Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and Their Astonishing Odyssey Home, was recentlypublished by Simon & Schuster.
