The decision to close the Prince Frederick Fitness Center is based on operating costs and the limited use of the center. The Fitness Center located in Building B, Room B-102, will be repurposed after December 20, 2019.

All exercise equipment will be removed and space will be reconfigured to accommodate personal enrichment dance classes. These courses will begin to be scheduled in the Spring, 2020, with registration anticipated opening January 9. 2020. For information about these interest-based classes as well as hours of operation of the Fitness Centers and pools located at the La Plata and Leonardtown campuses, visit or call 301-539-4760.

One class is currently meeting at the Prince Frederick Fitness Center during Fall 2019 and will continue to meet as scheduled throughout the semester. Current individual memberships for the Prince Frederick Fitness Center will continue through the Fall semester.

The Prince Frederick Fitness Center will remain available for students, staff, and faculty until December 20, 2019. Those who hold Prince Frederick Individual Fitness Center Memberships which expire at the end of the Fall 2019 semester are being offered the opportunity to renew their membership for use at La Plata and Leonardtown fitness centers and pools through the college’s Individual Quarterly Membership at the same cost as the Prince Frederick Individual Membership, through June 30, 2020. This membership will include use of the pool.

The Southern Maryland Chronicle is a local, small business entrusted to provide factual, unbiased reporting to the Southern Maryland Community. While we look to local businesses for advertising, we hope to keep that cost as low as possible in order to attract even the smallest of local businesses and help them get out to the public. We must also be able to pay employees(part-time and full-time), along with equipment, and website related things. We never want to make the Chronicle a “pay-wall” style news site.

To that end, we are looking to the community to offer donations. Whether it’s a one-time donation or you set up a reoccurring monthly donation. It is all appreciated. All donations at this time will be going to furthering the Chronicle through hiring individuals that have the same goals of providing fair, and unbiased news to the community. For now, donations will be going to a business PayPal account I have set-up for the Southern Maryland Chronicle, KDC Designs. All business transactions currently occur within this PayPal account. If you have any questions regarding this you can email me at

Thank you for all of your support and I hope to continue bringing Southern Maryland the best news possible for a very long time. — David M. Higgins II
