ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – St. Mary’s College of Maryland Athletics is pleased to announce the hiring of Matt Howerton as the Seahawks’ assistant men’s basketball coach, the department announced today. Howerton, who will also serve as the assistant director of game operations, brings over five years of collegiate coaching experience to St. Mary’s College.
“I’m excited to have Matt Howerton join our staff as our assistant coach,” stated Head Men’s Basketball Coach Chris Harney ’97.”Matt has volunteered for our basketball program for over two years and is completely deserving of the full-time position. He has been a dedicated and loyal member of our staff and will continue to work tirelessly at providing a great experience for our student-athletes.”
Howerton heads into his new role with a vast knowledge of the St. Mary’s College men’s basketball program as he served as a volunteer assistant coach for the past two seasons. Howerton assisted in all aspects of the Seahawk men’s basketball program in the last two years.
I am thrilled to get to work as the next assistant men’s basketball coach at St. Mary’s College of Maryland,” said Howerton. “I am excited to be a part of the SMCM community and learn under one of the best head coaches in the country in Chris Harney ’97. I would like to thank him and our Director of Athletics Scott Devine for this opportunity and the support they have shown me these past couple of years!”
Before joining the Seahawks, Howerton spent two seasons at Marymount (Va.) University (2015-17) as an assistant coach. He joined the Marymount staff in 2015 after spending a year at the Impact Basketball Academy in Sarasota, Florida, where he was an assistant coach for both its post-graduate and varsity high school teams. Howerton was also a player development specialist, working with kids from all over the United States and different countries of the world. With his efforts, he helped numerous players earn scholarships to various levels of collegiate basketball.
Prior to Impact, Howerton was the head manager at Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania for four years where he oversaw and coordinated the team’s managers and provided smooth operation of the team. He also assisted the whole men’s basketball staff under Head Coach Joe Lombardi. Howerton helped the program to a 99-23 record, four regular-season Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships and two conference tournament championships in his four years as manager.
In August 2014, he worked with the Dominican National Team’s training camp. Additionally, Howerton has worked with various Division I camps at Kentucky, Virginia Commonwealth, St. Louis, Navy, George Mason, and Hoop Group. He also volunteered as a youth coach at the Chantilly Youth Association for the SNAP Special Needs Assistant program.
A native of Chantilly, Virginia, Howerton graduated from IUP in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in sports administration and a minor in business.

The Southern Maryland Chronicle is a local, small business entrusted to provide factual, unbiased reporting to the Southern Maryland Community. While we look to local businesses for advertising, we hope to keep that cost as low as possible in order to attract even the smallest of local businesses and help them get out to the public. We must also be able to pay employees(part-time and full-time), along with equipment, and website related things. We never want to make the Chronicle a “pay-wall” style news site.
To that end, we are looking to the community to offer donations. Whether it’s a one-time donation or you set up a reoccurring monthly donation. It is all appreciated. All donations at this time will be going to furthering the Chronicle through hiring individuals that have the same goals of providing fair, and unbiased news to the community. For now, donations will be going to a business PayPal account I have set-up for the Southern Maryland Chronicle, KDC Designs. All business transactions currently occur within this PayPal account. If you have any questions regarding this you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Thank you for all of your support and I hope to continue bringing Southern Maryland the best news possible for a very long time. — David M. Higgins II
