Leonardtown, MD- At the annual Maryland Governor’s Cup Wine Competition this September, The Port of Leonardtown Winery (POLW) took home the Best-in-Class: White Varietal award for their 2018 Vidal Blanc. This year’s competition featured 140 entries from nearly 30 Maryland wineries. “It is an honor to win such an award because this competition features Maryland-made wines, produced only with grapes grown in the state,” Michael Hughes, POLW General Manager.
Lauren Zimmerman, the winemaker at POLW, says she “remembers when the delivery truck pulled up to the winery loaded with the grapes that made our 2018 Vidal Blanc. The sky opened up and poured down rain on the freshly harvested fruit.” Rain during the harvest season is typically considered a bad thing in the wine industry because it dilutes the flavor of the freshly picked fruit. Nevertheless, this wine went on to be bursting with flavors and excellent aromas.
Winning the best-in-class award shows that even in not-so-good climates, phenomenal wines can be produced, especially in Southern Maryland. As David Wood, President of the Southern Maryland Wine Growers Cooperative and part-owner explains, “we take great pride in being selected for any award. That it comes from the prestigious Maryland Governor’s Cup is even more special.
The recognition of “Best in Class” award is a true honor. It says Port of Leonardtown has excellence in finishing a fine wine that began in an excellent vineyard. We are humbled by all the awards of our wines in many classes. Year after year over the last decade, the vineyards of the Southern Maryland Wine Growers Cooperative continue to improve.
Pairing great vineyards with Lauren Zimmerman, our premier winemaker, is proving to consistently create great wines.” Follow along with us as we continue to grow!

The Southern Maryland Chronicle is a local, small business entrusted to provide factual, unbiased reporting to the Southern Maryland Community. While we look to local businesses for advertising, we hope to keep that cost as low as possible in order to attract even the smallest of local businesses and help them get out to the public. We must also be able to pay employees(part-time and full-time), along with equipment, and website related things. We never want to make the Chronicle a “pay-wall” style news site.
To that end, we are looking to the community to offer donations. Whether it’s a one-time donation or you set up a reoccurring monthly donation. It is all appreciated. All donations at this time will be going to furthering the Chronicle through hiring individuals that have the same goals of providing fair, and unbiased news to the community. For now, donations will be going to a business PayPal account I have set-up for the Southern Maryland Chronicle, KDC Designs. All business transactions currently occur within this PayPal account. If you have any questions regarding this you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Thank you for all of your support and I hope to continue bringing Southern Maryland the best news possible for a very long time. — David M. Higgins II
