Seahawk Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award

News Release, St. Mary’s College of Maryland

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The St. Mary’s College of Maryland volleyball team earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2018-19 season, the organization announced today. The AVCA announced that 1,125 teams have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award, breaking the previous year’s total of 977 to set an all-time high.

“It’s truly an honor to get to coach these young ladies,” said head volleyball coach, Kelly Martin. “The drive they show on the court and in the classroom is amazing and they understand the work it takes to excel as a student-athlete. I am so proud of them for performing at such a strong academic level this past year.”

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

In addition to being recognized for their academic accomplishments, the Seahawk volleyball team was honored for reaching their “Dig Pink” fundraising goal through the Side-Out Foundation.  “Dig Pink” is a nationwide movement to provide meaningful and impactful experiences for athletes while inspiring and empowering them to come together in support of the stage IV breast cancer community. Each year, hundreds of teams across the country participate in the “Dig Pink” rally.

The Southern Maryland Chronicle is a local, small business entrusted to provide factual, unbiased reporting to the Southern Maryland Community. While we look to local businesses for advertising, we hope to keep that cost as low as possible in order to attract even the smallest of local businesses and help them get out to the public. We must also be able to pay employees(part-time and full-time), along with equipment, and website related things. We never want to make the Chronicle a “pay-wall” style news site.

To that end, we are looking to the community to offer donations. Whether it’s a one-time donation or you set up a reoccurring monthly donation. It is all appreciated. All donations at this time will be going to furthering the Chronicle through hiring individuals that have the same goals of providing fair, and unbiased news to the community. For now, donations will be going to a business PayPal account I have set-up for the Southern Maryland Chronicle, KDC Designs. All business transactions currently occur within this PayPal account. If you have any questions regarding this you can email me at

Thank you for all of your support and I hope to continue bringing Southern Maryland the best news possible for a very long time. — David M. Higgins II
