Aug. 23, 2019 update: The St. Mary’s County Crime Solvers has received $10,000 in donations toward the reward for information and resolution of an animal cruelty case last month in Mechanicsville. The St. Mary’s County Crime Solvers Board of Directors thank the community for their generous donations to aid in the resolution of this heinous case.

UPDATE: July 19, 2019– From the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office @ 3:30 p.m.-
Necropsies were completed on both dogs at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and valuable investigative information was obtained. The results of the necropsies will not be released due to the sensitive nature of the information and adverse effects on the ongoing investigation.
The remains of the dogs will be retained for return to the owner(s), if not complicit in the crime, or for a humane burial at a later date. At this time, the owner(s) of the dogs remain unidentified and the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is seeking public assistance with information on the identity of the owner(s). UPDATE July 19. 2019- The Southern Maryland Chronicle has spoken to St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Cpl. Julie Yingling and she states,” There is no status change in the animal cruelty case since the last press release I disseminated. The animals have had the necropsies completed, however due to this being an open investigation the results of the necropsies are not being released at this time. “
Also, for the GoFundMe started by Kim Summy; it is now up to $3225.00.
The total “reward” money stands at $9025.00 with donations; in addition to the GoFundMe and St. Mary’s Crime Solvers($1000.00), from a local veterinarian ($1000.00), Calvert Commissioner Kelly McConkey($3000.00) and a Private Donor($500.00). Ms. Summy states in a Facebook post; on July 19, 2019, @ 8:45 a.m., she has reached out to the local Labrador Retriever Rescue to become the beneficiary of the monies to help ease people’s minds and also, this enables the donors to be able to write it off as a charitable contribution, as the group is a 501c3.
She also states that the Rescue group will be able to properly use the funds in the memory of Elijah and Nakir( the names given to them by Ms. Summy) if the reward money is not used for that.
In terms of the investigation, detectives are relying on the public, searching the internet, and social media for any clues. Based on the necropsy of the dogs, they believe they have information that only the perpetrator(s) would know.

Update by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office regarding the status of the dog’s bodies: St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab Technicians transported both dogs to a local veterinarian hospital for an assessment and evaluation. The dogs were determined to be male and ages are unknown at this time. The dogs are being transferred to Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University where necropsies will be performed in an attempt to gather additional investigative information.
Mechanicsville, MD- On Sunday, July 14, 2019, Kim Carter Summy posted on her public Facebook that two black labradors were found beheaded behind her home on Parlett Morgan Road in Mechanicsville. Many people on the original post claimed it to be a hoax. On Monday, July 15, 2019, The Southern Maryland Chronicle posted the report given out by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.
The St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the St. Mary’s County Animal Control determined the dogs had been beheaded and were in the location for approximately 48 hours. Anyone with information on the possible owners of the dogs, or anyone with information on this case, is asked to contact DFC. Through the Crime Solvers Program tipsters are eligible for an award of up to $1,000 for information about a crime in St. Mary’s County that leads to an arrest or indictment.
As for the residents that found the dogs, Ms. Summy has posted on her Facebook that they are cremating the dogs at the Pawsitive Passage Per Crematory and they will be buried on a friend’s property next to other labradors.
Ms. Summy and her husband, Larry have also started a GoFundMe in order to substantially raise the reward money being offered by the Sheriff’s Office($1000.00). The GoFundMe has raised $1,060 of the $5,000 goal as of 7:30 a.m. on July 16, 2019.
We have reached out to St. Mary’s Animal Control and Ms. Summy for more information and will update as soon as we have more from them or the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office with arrests. UPDATE: St. Mary’s County Emergency Services Director Steven Walker, who is on control of Animal control has directed all questions to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.
