Calvert Public Schools honored as US Dept. of Ed Green Ribbon School

Federal Program in its Eighth Year

BALTIMORE (May 22, 2019) – The U.S. Department of Education has announced that two Maryland honorees for the 2019 Green Ribbon Schools (GRS) Awards.

Captain James E. Daly Elementary School in Montgomery County received a 2019 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon recognition, while the Calvert County Public Schools is a 2019 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School District Sustainability Awardee. The Maryland honorees are among 25 schools and 14 school systems nationwide to receive this prestigious recognition.

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsey DeVos made the announcement today. Applications for the award were evaluated by a committee comprised of staff from State and national government agencies, State and regional environmental organizations, and private businesses.

Dr. Karen Salmon, State Superintendent of Schools, applauded the winners and commended them for the leadership role they play.

“U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools are dedicated to environmental education and conserving our natural resources for the next generation,” Dr. Salmon said.  “The critical work of Captain James E. Daly Elementary School and the Calvert County Schools serves as a reminder that each of us can make an important difference in the future of our nation and our world.”  

The U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon program recognizes schools that save energy, reduce costs, feature environmentally sustainable learning spaces, protect health, foster wellness, and offer environmental education to boost academic achievement and community engagement. The recognition award is part of a larger U.S. Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about practices proven to result in improved student engagement, academic achievement, graduation rates, and workforce preparedness, as well as a government-wide aim to increase energy independence and economic security.
