Washington Spirit challenge Reign FC on first-ever “Star Wars Night”

News Release, Washington Spirit

Boyds, Md. (5/3/19) – The Washington Spirit will play host to Reign FC this Saturday at the Maryland SoccerPlex as the two clubs face off in an important fixture early in the season. The weather is expected to be partly cloudy and 75º at kickoff, making it a beautiful night at the Plex.

With just one point separating Reign FC and the Spirit early on in the 2019 NWSL regular season, both teams will come into the match knowing three points are a necessity. Reign FC have started the season slowly, gaining just two points for their first three games, while the Spirit have won one and lost one game thus far this season. The Spirit currently sit in 6th on the NWSL ladder, while Reign FC occupying 7th.

In their previous game, the Spirit were bested by Utah Royals FC in Sandy, Utah by a score of 1-0. Despite creating chances often throughout the 90, the Spirit fell just short in their first road game of the year. Spirit midfielder Rose Lavelle made her 2019 NWSL debut during that fixture after being subbed on for forward Cheyna Matthews at halftime.

Reign FC come into the fixture with a record of 0-2-1 following their 3-0 defeat to the Chicago Red Stars. Reign FC are expected to come to the SoccerPlex with three points on their mind as they try to break into the win column for the first time this season. Reign FC brings with them experienced goalkeeper Michelle Betos, who has made two starts, allowed two goals, but made eight saves, including seven against the Houston Dash.

This Saturday, the Spirit will be celebrating the club’s Star Wars Night! Fans who dress up as their favorite Star Wars characters can enter to win a special prize from the Spirit at their activation tent. Kickoff on Saturday is set for 7 p.m. ET, with Gate D and the Fan Zone opening for all ticket-holding fans at 5:45 p.m. ET and Gate A opening at 6:00 p.m. ET. [TICKETS]

The Southern Maryland Chronicle is a local, small business entrusted to provide factual, unbiased reporting to the Southern Maryland Community. While we look to local businesses for advertising, we hope to keep that cost as low as possible in order to attract even the smallest of local businesses and help them get out to the public. We must also be able to pay employees(part-time and full-time), along with equipment, and website related things. We never want to make the Chronicle a “pay-wall” style news site.

To that end, we are looking to the community to offer donations. Whether it’s a one-time donation or you set up a reoccurring monthly donation. It is all appreciated. All donations at this time will be going to furthering the Chronicle through hiring individuals that have the same goals of providing fair, and unbiased news to the community. For now, donations will be going to a business PayPal account I have set-up for the Southern Maryland Chronicle, KDC Designs. All business transactions currently occur within this PayPal account.
