Calvert County Seeks to Recognize Those Who Preserve Local History

News Release, Calvert County Government

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – March 7, 2019 – The Calvert County Department of Planning & Zoning is accepting nominations for the 30th Annual Calvert County Historic Preservation Awards.

Have you noticed an old house being restored as you drive around the county? Does someone in your community record its history or the stories and memories of its longtime residents? Now is the time to make sure that people who have worked to preserve Calvert County’s heritage and historic properties get recognized. There are three categories of awards to recognize outstanding contributions to the preservation of Calvert County heritage: project, service and preservation education awards.

Many people and projects have received Historic Preservation Awards over the last 29 years, including Golden Wolf, LLC, for restoration of the historic house that serves as its office in Huntingtown; the Friends of the Old Wallville School for saving and restoring the oldest remaining one-room school for African American children in the county; and Jeff Cunningham, Branson Wray and Rick Weber for public education exemplified by the archaeology class at Huntingtown High School. A sample of other awards includes Paul Berry for decades of devotion to research and action to preserve Calvert County heritage, the St. Leonard Vision Group for the book “St. Leonard: A Maryland Tidewater Community” and many others.
