Newport News, Va. – The fifth-seeded St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s lacrosse team saw their 2018 campaign come to an end Saturday afternoon in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament. St. Mary’s (8-10) was outlasted by No. 4 seed Christopher Newport University (10-8), 19-16. This is the second straight season CNU has knocked the Seahawks out of the CAC playoffs.
How It Happened
- After the host Captains struck first at 28:06, St. Mary’s used a 6-2 run to stake a 6-3 advantage on a free position goal by senior captain Megan Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep).
- Christopher Newport responded by scoring four of the next six goals to head into the break down just 8-7 after 30 minutes of action. Junior goalkeeper Emma Brown (Warwick,
N.Y./Warwick Valley) made eight first-half saves to keep the Seahawks in the lead. - The game was tied three times in the first four minutes of the second half before sophomore midfielder Kate Bartholomew‘s (Galena, Md./Kent County) 38th goal of the season gave St. Mary’s its final lead of the game, 11-10, at 23:40.
- Sarah Culver sparked a 6-0 run for CNU as Culver two consecutive goals to jumpstart the spurt and put the Captains ahead, 16-11, with 15:19 left in the game.
- The Seahawks answered back with a run of their own, rattling off five in a row to pull within one at 6:19 on a free position goal by junior midfielder Caitlin Katchmar (Phoenix, Md./Hereford).
- St. Mary’s would close the gap to one once again at 4:44 on a free position goal by junior attacker Ali Collie (Glen Arm, Md./Dulaney). However, Christopher Newport never relinquished the lead and Culver notched the game’s final two goals to seal the Captains’ spot in the CAC semifinals on Wednesday, May 2.

- Collie paced the Seahawks with five points on a career-best five goals, finishing five points shy of her 100th career point, while senior captain Gabby Beese (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) dished out a career-high five assists to end her with 75 points on 20 goals and 55 assists.
- Katchmar wrapped up her junior season with a career-best four goals for the fourth time in her career while Cannon added three goals and an assist to bring her four-year career totals to 66 goals and 13 assists for 79 points.
- Sophomore defender Dani MacDonald (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) collected a career-high six draw controls while Cannon, who also scooped up four ground balls, and Katchmar each grabbed five draws to give St. Mary’s a 20-17 edge in the middle.
- Junior attacker Sydni Thacker (Lutherville-Timonium, Md./McDonogh School) helped the Seahawks maintain possession with a career-best five ground balls while senior captain Maribeth Anderson (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) supported E. Brown’s15-save performance with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. E. Brown also picked up a career-high four ground balls.
- Culver posted a game-best seven goals while Carly Wilson also had seven points on a goal and six assists. Culver also won seven draw controls while Kaitlyn Ready also came up with 15 stops and four ground balls.
